3rd Waste-to-Energy Asia Summit: How advanced thermal waste treatment creates economic growth for South East Asia

Increasing amounts of generated waste and a growing energy demand – two challenges South East Asian economies need to comply with while simultaneously delivering on sustainability targets. At the 3rd Waste-to-Energy (WtE) Asia Summit that takes place from 30 November – 02 December in Bangkok, the thermal waste treatment specialist Doosan Lentjes and delegates from across the global waste management sector will discuss why proven WtE technology is the solution of choice for supporting a successful development of South East Asian economies.

According to the local Ministry of Energy, Thailand produced more than 15 million tons of municipal solid waste (MSW) in 2009, but only 25% of this generated waste was treated which is equivalent to approx. 3.9 million tons. From these roughly 3.9 million tons only 3% were sent to waste incinerators to produce only 3MW of electricity. Considering that the annual waste production in Thailand grew by 9% year-over-year to 27 million tons in 2013, this largely CO2 neutral energy source has the potential to make a valuable contribution to covering the increasing energy demand of the Thai economy.

“Thermal waste treatment helps South East Asian countries establish a sustainable waste management concept while reducing their reliance on imported energy”, says Gerhard Lohe, Director of the product line Waste-to-Energy (WtE) at Doosan Lentjes. “At the event in Bangkok we aspire to bring German thermal waste treatment technology together with local customers who require cost-efficient and environmentally-sound WtE solutions that reduce their waste volumes by up to 90% while maximising energy yields – a milestone to solving urgent South East Asian problems of waste disposal and power shortage.”

The summit in Bangkok represents a great cross-industry platform that aspires to discuss technologies, developments and ideas while outlining application and implementation concepts for the South East Asian economies.
Doosan Lentjes is a specialist in the delivery of proven and reliable waste-to-energy technology, converting millions of tonnes of waste into valuable energy every year. This helps customers all over the world reduce their waste volumes and simultaneously provide a sustainable energy source.
