In quite cold but glorious sunshine, we visited the construction site in Ghent, Belgium, where a new sewage sludge incineration plant is currently being built. This marked the start of our 360° construction documentary, which will make the construction progress of the plant virtually accessible and explorable – even from the comfort of your own living room or office.
The innovative plant will be equipped with the most advanced technology, including a bubbling bed furnace, a steam generator and a multi-stage flue gas cleaning system. Once completed, it will not only ensure safe sewage sludge disposal, but also enable the recovery of phosphorus – an important step towards a sustainable circular economy. With a capacity of 65,000 tonnes of dry substance per year, the facility will be one of the largest of its kind in Europe.
The project includes one process line and is being realised under a DBFMO contract which the Flemish municipal wastewater treatment company Aquafin has awarded to FOSTER – a consortium of the BESIX Group and Indaver NV. Doosan Lentjes is responsible for the engineering, supply, installation and commissioning of the process, mechanical and electrical systems under a turnkey contract.
